CloudWatch Alarms: the monitoring that acts, not just records

𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀
Most people wait until something goes down to think about monitoring. I configured it before that happened 🚀
When I set up 𝗻𝟴𝗻 with autoscaling on 𝗔𝗪𝗦, there was no incident that forced me to. It was a conscious decision: if the system is going to scale on its own, it needs eyes that also act on their own 💻
That's where 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 came in. The key isn't just seeing the metrics — it's connecting those metrics to 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 👇
Here's how I set it up:
📊 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱: 𝗖𝗣𝗨 and 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆
⚡ 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺: if CPU > 70% for N minutes → alarm triggered
🔁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 1: fires the 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 → new instance ready in minutes
📬 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 2: notification via 𝗦𝗡𝗦 → hits my inbox instantly
The system scales on its own 𝗮𝗻𝗱 I find out it scaled. Without having to stare at dashboards all day 😅
The difference between passive and active monitoring is simple:
🔴 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 → tells you what happened after the disaster
🟢 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 → acts 𝗮𝗻𝗱 alerts you before the disaster arrives
Champion, does your monitoring alert you or act — or does it still do neither? 🤔
Keep flying, Champions! ✈️
